Cafcass Word Meanings & Glossaries

In this section of the website, you can find out a range of useful content, such as the meaning of specific Cafcass words in our Cafcass glossary, and the Family Justice Young People’s Board’s ‘busted words’ guide to the use of simplified, jargon-free language.

Glossary

Cafcass and the Family Justice Young People’s Board (FJYPB) have together created a useful and comprehensive glossary containing the terms, words and phrases that are commonly used in family court proceedings. It aims to simplify the meaning of these sometimes complex words in clear, simple language to make them as accessible and easy to understand as they can be.

Whether you're preparing for a court hearing, trying to understand paperwork about your case, or simply wanting to know more about the process, this glossary is here to help you navigate the family court system with greater confidence and understanding.

You can read our glossary here.

Word Busting

The FJYPB has worked with Cafcass to help create new clear and jargon free language to be used when speaking to or writing about children and young people. It encourages the use of plain English, with simple explanations to help children and families understand the role of Cafcass and what is happening to them during their time involved in family court.
